The “Baby” of the Family

Vanessa SmoochI always enjoy the Sunday A.M. feature in the State Journal-Register, in particular the columnists Dan Naumovich and our own Julie Kaiser who share their family and parenting perspectives for us all.

Dan’s column yesterday was about managing the “Cute Spell” of his youngest child.

Take a read.

It’s a fun one, and I know we can all relate to how hard it is for the “baby” to drop their cute words and adorable attention-getting behaviors.

I definitely agree with Dan that yes, sometimes we slack on the rules for the younger ones out of pure exhaustion.  In my house, my baby’s darling word is “caminal” (which is how she pronounces “camel”).  However, now that she is five, she knows the correct pronunciation and still uses the old one just to humor me.

I am also the “baby” in my family, the youngest of three with an older brother and sister. I loved being last in line. I learned what to do, what not to do, and I was the neutral party in many cases hearing my brother and sister battle it out.  Although, I fought my fair share of battles with my brother when I got older, at least I was prepared!

I do think it’s extra sentimental being the “baby.”  I was the last one out before the empty nest hit, wow!  Now that I’m nearing 40, there’s no doubt my parents have done their job, but I know their level of concern for my well-being is no different today than when I was a young toddler.

Parenting is a lifelong journey, so enjoy all ages and stages of your kids!
