Silly Bandz: Cheap, Fun, Trend of the Summer

Have your kids given in to the “silly bandz” craze? My daughters sure have!  The level of excitement over earning them through household chorse or trading them with their friends…it’s fun, cheap entertainment and provides a lot of discussion around our house (and a few sibling battles as well.)

At our latest family gathering, the girls spread all of their silly bandz out on a coffee table and then passed around some of the “hard ones” for my parents and other siblings to guess the shapes.

Is it just a fad, or something that will stick around for a while and evolve? Here are some comments from our facebook fan page readers.

  • “My boys like them too! I found 12-packs at Wal-mart a couple of days ago for $1/pack. They had about five different packs to pick from too! I think it’s neat. It’s one of the least expensive ‘collections’ my boys have had so far!” – Angie N.
  • “My daughter is nuts over them too…and I agree, it’s a lot cheaper than Webkinz!” – Shari B.
  • “I agree! My girls love them and they get them as a special treat and use their chore money to buy them. My one daughter now has 102 and is SO proud! Reminds me of those bracelets that, as a kid, we used to wrap two together on our wrists only these are cooler! – Kristi L.
  • “My girls love these and I think they are cool. I love the way they keep their shape. I like the prices also! Glad to see the Christian ones too.” – Teresa T.
  • “Wish I would have invented that trend!” – Ruth H.
  • “My son decided to ‘share’ his at camp yesterday and gave them all away. Then he cried all the way home. Luckily they’re a cheap fad!” – Nicola E.
  • “The BP on Sangamon and Dirksen sells some glow-in-the-dark and different ones but they charge $3 for a pack of 12.” – Jennifer F.
  • “The Rose Cottage in Petersburg has them. Lots of shapes and they were $4.99 for 24 and they are the ‘real’ ones! I’ve had to limit the kids to just a few packs but they sure love them and have just started trading with their friends. It’s cheap entertainment for them.” – Amy L.
  • “My boys love them. We share, trade, etc. And they get them as rewards as well as for having good days. We have gotten some from Walgreens, Hallmark, ShopKo, Meijer and Walmart. Hallmark having the best quality (breakability) at $3.99 for a pack of 24.” – Liz B.

My daughter received two from her pediatrician after getting her immunizations for school! Really took the sting away fast!
