Mother’s Day “Snuggle Up and Read Together” Book Nook Picks

The Night Before Mother’s Day by Natsha Wing, illustrated by Amy Wummer.  Grosset and Dunlap, 2010.  You have to love it when Dad gets involved.  He and the kids go to work in the kitchen baking a Mother’s Day cake, putting together a home-made “spa” coupon and coming up with fun ways to show Mom their love.  A fun book!

Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins. Disney-Hyperion, 2015. Bruce the Bear likes to keep to himself, but he learns the trials and joys of motherhood when the goslings are convinced he’s their mother. A laugh-out-loud book with a sweet conclusion.

Pouch! by David Ezra Stein. Penguin Books, 2009.  My children loved this book because of the baby kangaroo that ventures out time and again only to be frightened and jump back into his mom’s pouch.  Until he finally meets another kangaroo and makes friend.  The pictures are bold and the text is simple. Appropriate for beginning readers and plain fun to read aloud.

Mango, Abuela, and Me by Meg Medina, illustrated by Angela Domingues. Candlewick, 2015. Three generations of women. Great for grandmothers and mothers!

I Like Noisy; Mom Likes Quiet.  A Mother’s Day Story by Eileen Spinelli, illustrated by Lydia Halverson.  Ideals Children’s Books, 2006. Ages 5 – 8.  Little Raccoon goes to great efforts to change his way for one special day, but Mom loves him just the way he is.

Before We Met by Laura Krauss Melmed and Jing Jing Tsong. Beach Lane Books, 2016. In this gorgeous book, a mother tells about the love she had for her little one even before they met. A lovely look at the love between a mother and her baby.

My Mother is Mine by Marion Dane Bauer, illustrated by Peter Elwell.  Aladdin Paperbacks, 2001.  This book is perfect to read to a baby or toddler.  It is also a wonderful beginning reader book.  The illustrations are cozy, and the text is simple but direct.

Mama’s Kisses by Kate McMullan & Tao Nyeu. Dial, 2017. A sweet rhyming bedtime story celebrating mothers’ love.

Mother’s Day Sandwich by Jillian Wynot, illustrated by Maxie Chambliss.  Orchard Books, 1990. The kids sneak around to make breakfast in bed for their slumbering mom.  They make an inspired mess in the kitchen and then when they bring breakfast in, mom wakes up with a start and accidentally tumbles the tray all over the bed.  No worries!  What she really wants is a “sandwich” — to be in the middle of hugs from her two little ones.  Perfect for preschoolers and early elementary.  The illustrations will tickle you!

Before You Were Here, Mi Amor by Samantha R. Vamos, illustrated by Santiago Cohen. Viking Juvenile, 2009. Members of a family explain how they prepared for baby’s arrival.

Bloom by Deborah Diesen & Mary Lundquisth. Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2017. This illustrated story celebrates life and growing up. A mother and daughter plant a garden to see how something small blooms into something beautiful & strong.
