Davy’s Pirate Ship Adventure Book Review

“The world is diverse, reading should be too!”

This is the headline you’ll find on the blog of local firefighter, Dad and author, Danual Berkley.  He reached out to SpringfieldMoms to celebrate the launch of his new children’s book: Davy’s Pirate Ship Adventure.  When you read about his inspiration to put pen to paper as an author, you too will be inspired!

“As a kid, I never saw any children’s books about black families. So my focus is to create stories and characters that kids of color can relate to. A lot of the stories I write are stories created right at home. When I’m at home playing with my boys and we’re fighting aliens or out-running monsters, we’re essentially creating stories. After we’re done playing, I write them down on paper.”  Danual Berkley

My daughter Vanessa who is a frequent babysitter and avid reader share’s her comments here.

“The book was a great read for kids who love imagination. The illustrations where really good and fit the story perfectly. The author did a really good job at adding new twist and turns throughout the novel. I really enjoyed how at the end of the book the author explained each character, which I thought was really cool and fun. I enjoyed how the characters were also based off of the author and his family, which gave the book a very meaningful touch. Overall it was a great book and would be fun for any child to read.”

I agree with Vanessa’s review. The story is imaginative and lively; the illustrations are colorful and compliment the story well, and it’s one you hope will continue to expand with continued adventures.  I would suggest this book as a wonderful gift for Dads, grandparents and any child to enjoy.

I read to my son every night before bed. He loves it. I have to read at least three books a night. We are always welcoming new books that we haven’t read before.
