Book Nook – Facing & Dealing With Bullies

We’ve gathered recommendations for helping your children when they are experiencing, or noticing, bullying.

  • Bruno’s Hat by Canizales. Flyaway Books, 2019. Told from the point of view of Bruno’s best friend, Peter, this insightful children’s book explores bullying—especially the choices children face in defending others who are bullied. Readers will see Peter’s struggle to overcome his own fear of being bullied as he learns how to help a friend. Bruno’s Hat features a variety of animal characters and colorful, lively illustrations. For ages 3-7.
  • Red and Pep – Fly Bird, Fly! by Elisa Anderson. Amazon, 2020. A bedtime story about how to deal with emotional bullies. For ages 4-6.
  • Slugger the Slug: A Lesson for Bullies by James Taris. Amazon, 2020. A lesson in poem form, written by a teacher. For ages 4-7.
  • Real Friends by Shannon Hale, illustrated by LeUyen Pham. First second, 2017. A graphic memoir about how hard it is to find your real friends—and why it’s worth the journey. For grades 3-6. 
  • A Bully in Monkeyville by Ari Mazor. MazorBooks, 2020. Written by a high school senior, this book raises awareness about bullying in school and on the playground. For ages 3-8. 
  • The No More Bullying Book for Kids by Vanessa Green Allen, illustrated by Emmeline Pidgen. Rockridge Press, 2018. This book is your child’s guide to build the skills and resilience to confidently handle bullying whenever or wherever it occurs. For grades 3-7.
  • Speak Up, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell, illustrated by David Catrow. G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, 2020. When school starts and a bully begins teasing everyone, including a new student, Molly Lou knows just what to do. This book is a great way to show how to stand up to bullies. For ages 4-8.
