“A Parent Understands What a Child Does Not Say”

This anonymous quote says it all. We know “the looks” or “cries” of our children. It started when they were babies … we had to learn which cry meant hunger, which cry meant change me, and which cry meant, I don’t know what I need!

The looks in my house represent a range of instances: the “I’m tired, but won’t admit it” look;  the “I need you to hug me now” look; the “I want to be a grown-up and make my own decisions” look; the “whatever mom” look; the “stop taking pictures of me” look and others. But my favorite looks are the wonderful smiles I get when they know they have my full attention, with no distractions, and I am fully engaged in THEM.

Sounds easy to do, but with our fast-paced weeks…it requires a conscious effort to eliminate distractions. I rarely answer calls when my kids and I are at home doing homework, recapping the day or getting ready for whatever activity is next on the list. I try my best to hold off on work activities until they are asleep, or we agree that I am working for X time while they do XX and then we are back on track.

My kids are at the age where they still want to play with me; the clock is ticking fast and I don’t want to miss out!

So, I’m working hard to avoid the “Mom, stop working look” and fully embrace the smiles, laughter and hugs.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day with your sweethearts.
