6 Plants for Your Backyard to Help Keep Mosquitoes Away

The gnats have finally migrated, but now the mosquito population is in full swing! There are many common household hacks you can do to take back your Springfield mom’s yard, and planting some strategic plants could help.

If you’re looking for a plant that doesn’t grow too big, blooms flowers full of nectar in the summer and smells like lemon with a pinch of mint, lemon balm is the perfect mosquito-repellent for you. It only grows to a height of 30-60 inches and the leaves from lemon balm can do more than just help keep mosquitoes away, they are commonly put in teas and used as flavoring!

Holy basil is named because it’s known for its religious and medical uses. It has long been used for insect repellent and is a common essential oil for health. It only grows about 12 to 24 inches tall and is used in Thai food!

This is actually a collection of plants. Including duckweed ferns, Texas hummingbird mint, common vervain and, most popular, citronella plant. Duckweed ferns can be fast growing and double in size within a matter of days. Texas hummingbird mint is a shrub that grows to about 3 feet high and 2 feet wide in maturity. The good thing about mosquito plants is you have a lot of options for whatever type of plant your yard might need.

Chives – the same additive you put in your cooking can actually repel mosquitoes! There’s not much convincing needed here: a plant you can have in your backyard that doesn’t take up much room which can be used for cooking and enjoying the outdoors? Sold.
