Kindness Matters … Always

I saw this quote in my daily calendar: “Kindness, I’ve discovered, is everything in life.”  Isaac Bashevis Singer.  It’s now on the refrigerator.

What images do we hold most dear? For me, it’s the times when I reflect on the kind words, acts and affection throughout our lives. Our teacher, our neighbor, a good Samaritan at the right time, our friends old and young, and our family. It’s the kind things people do that leave lasting impressions.

It was impressed upon me from a very young age that little things mean a lot. Seeing cheerful notes around the house growing up, notes in my lunch box until I was too embarassed and had to hide them, writing thank you notes, calling family members near and far on their special days or just to say hello.

How about the person who helped my dog, while my daughters and I stepped out of our totaled car, unscathed? The lovely neighbor who brought over coffee and muffins the day I moved into my new house. The friend who checks in with you when she knows you need a boost. Those little moments of letting someone else go ahead of you in the store, at the gas station, anywhere!

Taking time to be kind to others requires a conscious action, and it’s one I focus on a lot!

Driving home today from work, I heard the words from one of Jewel’s popular songs….”in the end, only kindness matters.”

The sun was peering through my car, warming my skin and the peaceful tone of this song made me smile, relax and remember how important kindness is in our lives.

Share your favorite acts or moments of kindness from others…it will certainly spread the good feelings around!
