Making Memories on Rainy Days

imagesThis is a post I have wanted to take time to do for awhile. I feel like so much of our time as parents is spent rushing around driving from one activity to another. Between work, cleaning and the endless extra curricular activities our kiddos are in, it seems that there is very little time to just enjoy each other. That was why today, when it rained much of the morning I felt relieved. Time stood still and I didn’t feel like I had to rush the kids out the door to swim or go to the park. I didn’t have to run an errand or clean the kitchen because the weather was slowing us all down today.
Today I played somewhere between 6 to 485,689 rounds of a card game today with my kids. I mean I actually just sat there and played. I didn’t think about what else I needed to do. I didn’t check my phone. I didn’t put on the TV in the background for noise. I sat there and lived in the moment.
We all play with our kids and we all have times we tell our kids “In a minute.” Being a parent is about the balance between both playing and working. I know we are told “Enjoy every moment” or “The cleaning can be done later, enjoy them while they are young”  But the truth is we have to clean our house and not every moment is enjoyable. Sometimes the rainy days are just what we need to remind us that we can and should slow down. In the grand scheme of things will my kids remember this small rainy day where we played the same card game one million times? I don’t know. I do know I will. I will remember their giggles, their snuggles, and watching them get better with each hand.  It’s a small memory.  One that may melt into the background but today that rainy day was just what I needed to feel like everything else could wait and I could just make a memory.
On a side note: Should you feel the need to play a marathon session of cards with your kiddos: might I suggest the game Sleeping Queens?  It is a lot of fun.  A game that was actually invented by a 6 year old but enjoyed just as much by adults. Check it out here!  search
