“The Mitten” by Jan Brett is such a cute winter story. Why not read it with your kiddos and do a few mitten themed activities. We started off with this fun color matching. I cut out large mittens in rainbow colors and then put colorful letters, shapes, lids and buttons in a bowl for kiddos to sort!
Next, the kids cut apart these animals from the story and glued them onto a large paper mitten. You could cut one out of construction paper or use the one from the printable. This is a great spacial skills activity, kids placing the animals so they will all fit on the mitten.
Another fun activity is to color mittens! I printed a pair of mittens like these. Then I drew lines to make the mittens striped. Now the mittens are ready to be colored. I have the kids choose two colors, so they could make an AB pattern with the mittens.
For this last activity you will need an adult size mitten. Then gather a few items you can place inside the mitten. We used a Lego, small car, crayon or marker, small animal and anything else fun you can think of. Don’t let the children see the items. Place one item inside at a time. Have a child feel and try to figure out what is inside. If they can’t figure it out, I let them stick their hand inside and feel without looking.
