My Child Fractured their Front Tooth! What Should I Do?

Ask The Dentist: Dr. Allison Long, Prairie Dental Group

Our family has experienced this moment with one of our kids…thank you Dr. Long for addressing it in this featured article!

Treatment of fractures depends on the type of trauma, location, and severity of the injury. Immediate evaluation of the tooth by a dentist is needed regardless of type of trauma. In many cases, if the fracture is minor and the nerve of the tooth is not exposed, cosmetic bonding can be performed. Depending on variables such as the age of the patient and extent of injury, a crown may be recommended rather than cosmetic bonding. If the nerve is exposed, an evaluation for root canal therapy is needed. Due to all the variables, every case is a little different and it is recommended to get evaluated by a dentist.

The photo is a case I had a few weeks ago! I am sharing with permission from his mother. He was starting school in a few days when he was working on his Jeep and a wrench hit him in his mouth. Luckily, they contacted our office as soon as possible. Our office was able to quickly evaluate his tooth and restore his tooth with bonding in one visit! This family handled the trauma perfectly! As always, teeth that have had trauma need monitoring.
