Meet Brianna! CMN’s Miracle Child & Join the Radiothon

brianna-mae-vlachThe CMN Radiothon is a special time when you get to know numerous Central Illinois families that have benefitted from the  wonderful care at HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital a Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

Meet Brianna Mae Vlach

Brianna May Vlach was born in September 2001 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital six weeks before her due date. She was immediately admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. John’s. Extensive testing revealed Brianna was a very sick little girl.

When she left the NICU two months later to go home, she required oxygen and was fed through a tube in her stomach. It wasn’t until Brianna was six months old that she was diagnosed with a rare syndrome called Marshall Smith. Her life expectancy was 18 months.

“When we learned Brianna had very serious medical problems we were overwhelmed,” her mother, Judy, said. “There were no signs during my pregnancy that there were any problems. It was all a surprise.” Brianna has surpassed expectations.

“She is more alert and knowledgeable than expected,” Judy said. “Despite everything Brianna has gone through, she is a very happy child. She is always in a great mood and often makes those around her smile.”

Judy and Don Vlach are very thankful for the care Brianna has received at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. “Everyone works together to provide the best care for Brianna, who recently turned 15. Their knowledge and compassion are one of the things we love the most,” Judy said.
