St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th! As luck would have it, here are a few fun ideas for you, compliments of contributor Allison Klint.
This year’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is at Noon, Saturday, March 17th in Downtown Springfield. Note there are certain areas designated kid and family-friendly for viewing the parade. Details for the parade.
Preschool/Elementary Ideas
- Leprechaun hats – make green top hats using different shades of green paper. Here’s one sample from PBS Kids.
- Shamrock Scavenger Hunt – hide shamrocks throughout the house leading to the pot of gold. Have a prize attached to the pot of gold.
- Lucky Charms – throw caution to the wind and let your child eat Lucky Charms on March 17th.
- Fruit Loop Rainbows – glue fruit loops to a handmade rainbow drawing. Add a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for a little extra special touch.
Tween Ideas
- Pot O’ Fun – convert a simple serving bowl into a black kettle. Cut out some yellow “coins” from yellow construction. Have your child write a joke on one side. You can contribute to the Pot O’Fun too. Share a joke at the dinner table or every morning through March 17th.
- Green Thumb – Grow a shamrock plant. Local supermarkets or garden centers sell these fun plants. Re-pot into a fun planter made by your child and then watch it grow.
- Smilin’ Shamrocks – cut out shamrocks and put big smiley faces on them along with a message of praise or good wishes to a person in your household.

In the words of an Irish blessing, may your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go. Here’s to a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!\
