When Abraham Lincoln left Springfield  by train from the Great Western Depot on the morning of February 11, 1861, he was headed to Washington, D.C. to assume the presidency. His assassination in 1865 ensured he would never return alive making that train station the last place he ever set foot in Springfield.

Now called the Lincoln Depot, the station still stands at the intersection of the 10th Street rail corridor and Monroe Street. Its appearance remains largely true to how it appeared the day of Lincoln’s departure from Springfield.

The first floor is open to visitors for self-guided tours, while the second floor serves as a private law office. A short film is on continuous display in the lobby.
