This is a great indoor activity you can do with your kids and the birds will appreciate it too! For this craft you will need:
Half-gallon milk carton
- Box cutting knife
- Acrylic paint
- Glue
- Hole punch
- Paintbrush
- Small sticks (as straight as possible, collected outdoors)
- Birdseed
- Embellishments (such as buttons, paint, or markers)
Rinse out the inside of the milk carton and allow to air dry.
Using the box cutting knife, cut a semi-circle shape on one side of the milk carton. The opening should be about 4-5 inches high and about 3 inches wide, with the flat side of the semi-circle facing towards the bottom of the carton.
Have the child paint the outside of the milk carton with acrylic paint until the entire piece is well covered.
Take the small sticks and break them into 3 inch segments (break by hand or use pruning shears). Save one stick which should be about 6-7 inches.
Brush glue alongside the angled top sides of the carton, which will serve as the “roof.”
Affix the sticks to the roof. Save one of the sticks (preferably one that’s a little thicker).
Punch a hole in the side of the carton, just below the bottom of the semi-circle.
Insert the longer stick and push all the way to the back of the carton – secure this point with glue.
If desired, glue buttons onto the birdhouse or paint a design with other colors of acrylic paint/markers (make sure the first coat of paint is already 100% dry before completing the last step).
Add birdseed and place outdoors!
