Completed in 1855, it is one of the oldest and most historic governor’s mansions in the U.S., and it’s also one of the oldest historic residences in the state. This red brick Italianate mansion in downtown Springfield has been the home of Illinois governors since 1855, when Joel A. Matteson and his family moved in. Carefully restored in 1971, the building houses many treasures. The mansion was again reopeed in July 2018 after a spectacular three-year renovation. It is now fully ADA accessible and has professionally trained docents for guided tours and an all-new visitor.

When you walk inside, you immediately see the exquisite elliptical stairway which leads to spacious rooms decorated in British Regency style. Rooms are dedicated specifically to historic evvents, including the Columbian Exposition and pasat Illinois governors.
