Downtown Chicago: Places to Stay & Eat

Being the third largest city in the United States, it’s no surprise that there are countless things to do, places to eat, and plenty of places to stay while you’re there. The list below provides some helpful tips and resources for the downtown Chicago area.

Places to Stay

There are dozens of hotels in the downtown area, so it can be difficult to decide where to stay. Whether you’re looking for hotels that are more family-friendly, or something with a little more glitz, there are many options. Rates will vary greatly depending on the time of year or if there are large events in the area. Keep an eye on sites such as Priceline or Hotwire, as you can sometimes find rates as much as 50-75% off of their normal nightly rates. Tip: If you are driving, keep a close eye on parking options. Most downtown hotels charge a high fee for nightly parking, between $50-100 depending on the hotel. Below are some few reader favorites:

  • Fairfield Suites Chicago – Located just one block from the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue), this hotel offers packages that include some of the popular Chicago attractions.
  • Holiday Inn Express Magnificent Mile – Located just off of Michigan Avenue on Wabash. This hotel chain is known for their family friendliness. Small rooms, but they’re clean and across the street from a Trader Joe’s.
  • Homewood Suites – Located on Grand Avenue, just one block west of Michigan Avenue. This hotel features a welcome reception and free breakfast for guests.
  • Embassy Suites Chicago DowntownLocated a block east of Michigan avenue, within walking distance of many downtown attractions (River Walk, Navy Pier, Water Tower, etc.). This hotel has an indoor pool, and breakfast for guests. Self parking $48/night. Surcharge for Internet access.

Places to Eat

There are hundreds of restaurants in the downtown area and it’s impossible to list them all here. Below is just a small sampling of those that are well known and/or family friendly. The Yelp app can be useful in finding restaurants.

  • Gino’s East – Known for their deep dish pizza. There are multiple locations throughout the Chicagoland area. These restaurants get really busy. You can order your pizza for carryout to take back to your hotel for a more low key evening.
  • Giordano’s – Also well known for their deep dish pizza, with multiple locations throughout Chicago. These restaurants also get really busy, and do have a carry out option. Tip: If you’re driving, there is now a Giordano’s in Bloomington. Consider stopping for lunch on your way to Chicago or back home!
  • American Girl Place – Located right on Michigan Avenue, American Girl Place is a haven for young girls to bring their dolls, buy new outfits, have their hair styled, and even enjoy a unique dining experience. Dining options include a bistro that serves casual meals, a dessert counter, as well as a restaurant that serves afternoon teas and brunches. Your doll even has its own spot at the table. Make advance reservations to guarantee a spot.
  • Frontera – Located on Clark, a few blocks west of Michigan Avenue. This restaurant is owned by famous chef Rick Bayless. If you’re looking for something with an authentic Mexican flair, this restaurant is sure to please.
  • Quartino – Located on State Street. Family friendly restaurant, but we recommend not bringing strollers due to space limitations. The cuisine here is Italian, but served somewhat like tapas. Small plates come out as they’re ready and you can order as you go.
  • Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop – Located right on Michigan Avenue in the heart of the shopping/dining area. This is a tradition for many families. Get one of their delicious ice cream treats, and stock up on chocolate to take home or give as a gift. Tip: Check the link, as they sometimes have coupons!
  • Sugar Factory Chicago River North – Located on Grand Avenue in the River North Area. The whole family can be kids in a literal candy store. The large menu includes dozens of drinks, some of which are crazy concoctions with dry ice, gummies and lollipops. Most drinks can be served without alcohol. Regular food is also available, but the drinks are definitely a big attraction. Large restaurant space, but consider making reservations.
  • Eleven City Diner – Located in the South Loop area, near the museums. This spot has a very family friendly menu, that includes breakfast served all day and many great ice cream treats. It is also a Jewish delicatessen.
  • SafeHouse – Located on Ontario in the River North area. This restaurant is one that kids will love, with its spy theme, interactive exhibits and secret passageways. But they also have a very family friendly menu with lots of favorites and ice cream treats. Tip: Sign up on their website and get 20% off your first dining purchase.
