Day Trip at Starved Rock State Park an IL Treasure

When you look at these pictures, it’s hard to believe you’re still in Illinois! Hiking down into a canyon to experience a natural waterfall is possible in our home state! We spent about 4 hours at the park and enjoyed the quick walk to the Starved Rock Lookout point and then took the longer hike to St. Louis Canyon. The trail we took had numerous stairs (150 at one point I think) so the views are high and scenic! We had so many fun photo opportunities on the way, and when we heard the rush of the water we knew the waterfall was close by!

Wow! What a beautiful place! We lingered at the waterfall for about 30 minutes watching the girls exploring the rocks and coves within. There’s an onsite lodge at Starved Rock as well and the visitor’s center offered a nice selection of grab and go lunch, snacks and treats.

My daughter Vanessa compiled a one-minute video showing some of the highlights of the visit.

Next time we visit, we will ensure we have the following so here’s our list of things to bring!

  • Bottled water: one for each of you
  • Bug spray
  • Hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes (tennis shoes, not sandals or flip flops!)
  • Dogs are allowed on a leash (we saw several enjoying the trail!)
  • Your camera and your portable charger so you don’t miss a moment

We’re inspired to check out other State Parks after this pleasant getaway! Check out our list of State Parks and check out our review of Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort if you’re looking for a family-friendly place to stay while in Utica.
