One thing I have my students do throughout the year is to write weekend updates each Monday, during winter break updates, spring break updates..etc. We then put it in their end-of-the-year yearbook we create. The kids simply write about what they did, who they did it with, where did they go…etc.
I explain that the purpose is to read it and share a part of their lives to their families when they are older. I explain how I would LOVE to have something to look back on like this from when I was kid and could share with my family now. If you are looking for ideas of things to keep your kiddos busy over this extended break, have your children create their own “2020 Extended Spring Break” update to have when they get older.
The ideas are endless… adjust to your child’s ability level, help them come up with ideas to write about, use as many details as possible, more nouns, less pronouns, use first and last names of friends – in 25 years we often forget names! Make it fun, help them write, add pictures, use the computer with them, teach them skills you know. The biggest thing is to make fun!
