Ask the Dentist: Tooth Friendly Snacking

Snack time usually revolves around what foods are quickest and convenient. Common snacks such as chips, crackers, and pretzels can get stuck in the grooves of your teeth. Bacteria in plaque feed on these sticky carbohydrates and start to cause a breakdown in the enamel layer of teeth; which is when a cavity develops!

Try these tooth-friendly snack alternatives:

  1. Carrots, Celery, and Broccoli  are nicknamed “Nature’s Toothbrushes” because they help scrub off plaque while chewing.
  2. Cranberries: Not only are they packed with antioxidants but they prevent cavities! They contain a nutrient that prevents bacteria from sticking together. However, check if sugar has been added to your chosen cranberry snack.
  3. Nuts: They can provide a needed energy boost almost equivalent to a candy bar! Most nuts contain calcium and protein which are beneficial for healthy teeth.
  4. Fresh Fruits:  Did you know an apple a day can keep the dentist away? Consider apples or pears for your next snack! Apple and pears can help scrub off plaque.
  5. Yogurt: This snack can contain more calcium than an equal quantity of milk. Probiotics found in yogurt can help combat cavity producing bacteria.

Fun fact: Some of the most common snacks we see stuck in children’s teeth are Goldfish and Cheez It!
