St. John’s Hospital and Downtown Springfield, Inc., present the annual Old Capitol Holiday Walk, December 2, 3, 9, 16 and 23; from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.. Shop local and re-discover downtown this holiday season with your family and friends – stroll the festive streets of downtown Springfield and enjoy unique shopping and dining, creative window displays, free entertainment, horse-drawn trolley rides, lighted holiday tree, and Morning Star Reindeer Productions.
The Old State Capitol and Lincoln-Herndon Law Office will be open during the Walk and host special entertainment:
December 2 – Springfield High School Choir, 6-7 p.m. and Ben Bedford, 7-8 p.m.
December 3 – Sacred Heart-Griffin High School Choir, 6-7 p.m., Springfield Show Stoppers, 7-8 pm
December 9 – Southeast High School Choir, 6-6:30 p.m. and Mike Anderson and the DulciKids, 6:30 -7 p.m.
December 16 – Old State Capitol Chorale, 7 p.m., Cambric Garden (Holiday Music), 7-8 p.m.
December 23 – Cambric Garden (Christmas Diary Performance).
Additional entertainment include: Rochester High School (strolling) – December 9 at 5 p.m.; Sound Celebration (strolling) – December 9 at 6:30 p.m.; Horace Mann Choir (strolling) – December 16; Jill Manning –December 2 and Tom Irwin – December 3 at Recycled Records. Augie’s Front Burner will host wine tasting and an in-house artist exhibit.
To coincide with the Holiday Walk, a special performance, “Shopping and a Show” with Wil Maring and Robert Bowlin will be held December 9 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, Club Room, at 7:30 p.m. Maring and Bowlin combine talents to create beautiful original acoustic bluegrass, folk, and country music. Twenty-three downtown merchants are official Holiday Walk destinations, with nineteen joining forces to offer $500, $300 and $200 merchandise gift certificate giveaways! Shoppers may pick up their raffle card from participating retailers and the Midwest Family Broadcasting Studio on Fifth Street. Shoppers have between December 2 and December 23 to visit each participating location and turn in the raffle card. The winners will be notified by phone and announced by Midwest Family Broadcasting on December 24. In support of the Central Illinois Food Bank, downtown merchants will be collecting nonperishable food items during the Walk. Food items may be donated at Studio on Sixth, Tinsley Dry Goods, Recycled Records, Springfield Novelties & Gifts, Petals & Accents, Cold Stone Creamery and Augie’s Front Burner.
Old Capitol Holiday shoppers will find convenient parking in the underground garage beneath the Old State Capitol until 9:00p.m. during the evenings of the Walk. Parking for shoppers is free at downtown meters after 5 p.m. and free during regular business hours with a parking tag obtained through participating downtown merchants; complimentary parking tags are good only for the duration of the parking meter and not applicable to 30 minute meters.
The Korean War Veterans National Museum & Library, 3 Old State Capitol Plaza, will host Tis’Trains! Circus and U.S. Military Korean War Model Train Replica display and serve as a collection point for Toys for Tots; the site is open during the evenings of the Walk, and Friday and Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
