Growing up, I have always felt part of something far bigger than myself. Volunteering as a child gave me purpose and taught me compassion and empathy. Now I try to teach those same values to my children. As an individual or as a whole family, I believe we can do great things to help our community. Volunteering together also brings us closer as a family unit!
Like most families, time is of the essence with busy work schedules and after school activities, but there is always an opportunity to spend time together as a family and also help our community. Throughout the year, primarily for holidays, we see our communities congregate to help those in need.
However, there are always people in need of help, no matter what time of the year. Having just relocated from Kentucky, we have tried to check out the local volunteer spots that we could all join in on. Whether it is donating clothing or household items or volunteering your time for a cause, everything counts; everyone is helping make a change for better!
Below are some volunteering locations and some ideas for where you and your family can spend time together to help your community.

- Volunteer Illinois provides a volunteer database that will help you choose the best option for you or your family. There are many causes, walks, events and locations to choose from. Help is always needed! Phone: 217-786-2289. 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield, IL 62703-5402.
Take time to go through all your clothing/household items that are outgrown and find items that are no longer in use but still in good condition. Even if it is clothing from opposite seasons, it can be put away for donations. Here are some locations in which your donations go to help those in need:
- Year-round items including books, toys, clothing. Goodwill has various locations throughout Springfield and in Chatham. www.goodwill.com
- Winter clothes and coats. Illinois Kids Warm and Safe donation program. http://www2.illinois.gov/KeepWarm/Pages/Kidsafe.aspx
- Volunteer/donate at your local food bank. Central Illinois Food Bank helps many local food banks in need of assistance and can direct you to one in your neighborhood. There is always a need to stock shelves or organize canned goods.
- Contact Ministries.
- Children's clothing items for birth to age 6. Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery.
