The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is in desperate need for little girls to match with Big Sisters in a Community-Based Mentoring Program.
"I need little girls, from 5 to 7 years of age," says enrollment specialist Yvonne Wapniarski with Big Brothers Big Sisters. "I will take them if they are older, too! In regards to volunteers, we can never have too many volunteers. Any help will be greatly appreciated."
This program allows matches to spend 10 – 14 hours a month together working on homework/school work, life skills and educational curriculum as well as talking about things that are going on in the child's life. Matches spend time out in the community enjoying activities including: going to the park, watching a baseball game or attending a community event. Matches have the opportunity to explore their interests together, as well as new opportunities and experiences, all of which create and foster a positive friendship between the volunteer and child.
Studies show that kids matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister:
- are more confident
- more likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol
- do better in school
- get along better with family and friends
- feel better about themselves
Big Brother Big Sister's experienced approach to recruiting screening, nurturing and supporting our mentoring relationships has resulted in thousands of lasting relationships and helped change the lives of young people in our community.
