Adams Wildlife Sanctuary: Urban Nature Center

Adams Wildlife Sanctuary is a 40-acre parcel of land owned and managed by the Illinois Audubon Society. The house and property was owned by Miss Margery Adams and given to the Society upon her death so that her wildlife “friends” would forever remain protected.

Today the property includes the headquarters for the Illinois Audubon Society and the home of the Margery Adams Bird Banding Station. The original 1857 house was incorporated into the new construction and visitors are welcome to stop by and hear about her life and dedication to nature.

Jochens Hall, a large activity room, was included as part of the new construction and nature related workshops are often held there. Uncle Bob’s Viewing Pavilion lies just outside the hall and Wild Birds Unlimited has provided many feeders and a continuing supply of feed to attract many species of woodland birds — a great place to bird watch in any type of weather.

The Society’s goal at the Margery Adams Wildlife Sanctuary is its use as an urban nature center and we encourage visitors to stop by and enjoy the trails.

The north end of the property has undergone some recent restoration which will enable the Society to increase the trail system to include the new wetlands and prairie in the future. Staff is on site during normal business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, the trails are open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Classrooms or groups of all ages who wish to explore the trails can make arrangements for an interpretive tour by calling the office. Volunteer workdays are scheduled throughout the year and include a variety of tasks from outside work to inside administrative duties.

The mission of the Illinois Audubon Society is to promote the perpetuation and appreciation of native plants and animals the habitats that support them. Founded in 1897, it is the oldest conservation organization in Illinois.
