OLD CAPITOL HOLIDAY WALKS KICK OFF NOV. 25

Enjoy the #merryandmischief while You Shop, Dine and Drink Local; More Holiday Excitement Added this Year

Holiday Walk activities start on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 25, which is also Small Business Saturday, when many people choose to #shoplocal.

  • Downtown Springfield is one of the best shopping districts in the area for a wide selection of uniquely curated and often hand-crafted gifts. More than a dozen downtown shops carry women’s clothing, including the newly-opening Itty Bitty Fashion Trunk at 403 E Adams.
  • A pop-up Toy Shop will be located next door, and Café Moxo is staying open late for the Holiday Walks for the first time ever.
  • Find the SMTD Lighted Bus at 4th and Adams to get your “sELFie” in style and drop off Toys for Tots contributions.
  • Ribbon cuttings are scheduled for Willow & Birch Salon at 521 E Washington on November 29, and for Vele Restaurant at 524 E Monroe on December 6.
  • Kids should look for the Elf on the Shelf hiding in many downtown locations.

Holiday Walks activities take place every Wednesday evening from 5-8 pm and every Saturday from noon-6 pm through December 20. Most  activities are completely free thanks to DSI’s generous corporate and family sponsors. A detailed schedule of the activities, business specials and pop-up shops throughout the four week event is available at http://downtownspringfield.org/event/holidaywalks2017/.

  • SMTD has added a special bus route for the Holiday Walks between downtown and numerous historic sites decorated with special programs for the holidays. See attached for the stops along the 20-minute circular route including the Dana-Thomas House and Elijah Iles House, Illinois State Museum Super Saturday and more. The route is free for riders thanks to SMTD.
  • Enjoy Chestnuts Roasting thanks to Old Capitol Farmers Market vendor Suttill’s Gardens, roasting chestnuts on the Plaza. For a small fee, you can enjoy either roasted chestnuts or peanuts–either as a tasty treat or as an old-fashioned hand warmer!
  • Dancing Elves on the Plaza will direct you to Santa, thanks to the members of the Springfield Youth Performance Group.
  • This year’s Christmas Tree is being donated by Paul Tree Farms and will be erected next week. It is a 15-foot, soft-needle, white pine that will be placed on the east side of the Old State Capitol Plaza.
  • Giant Lighted Menorah donated by Chabad of Springfield will be placed on the Old State Capitol Plaza on December 5, with a special Menorah Lighting ceremony taking place at 6 p.m. onDecember 13.
  • Window Displays will be decorated at more than 40 storefronts, including vacant buildings. Fifteen community groups participated including Habitat for Humanity, Central Area Baptist Church, SAA Collective, Springfield Watercolor Society, the Springfield Bicentennial Committee and more. Shoppers can vote for their favorite Window Display starting November 25.
  • Musical Performances at the Old State Capitol will be offered by local high school groups including Lanphier High School Choir, Glenwood High School Band, and the Sacred Heart Griffin Band, plus UIS String Quartet and Chorus, and many more.

As always, street parking at the meters is FREE during all hours of the Holiday Walks. Convenient parking is also available in the underground garage beneath the Old State Capitol until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and 6 pm on Saturdays; the cost is 75 cents per half hour.
